Malaria kills a child in Africa every 30 seconds. That’s over one million lives lost every single year. But using insecticide treated bed nets can reduce episodes of malaria in children by half and deaths from malaria in children by one fifth.

Did you know that 1 in 4 of residents in the UK will be affected by mental health problems at some point in their lives, so it could affect someone you know and care about. Comic Relief is supporting a brand new campaign called ‘Time to Change’ which aims to raise awareness of mental health problems in England and tackle the stigma and discrimination around it.

Sub-Saharan Africa is more heavily affected by HIV and AIDS than any other region of the world. An estimated 24.5 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2005 and approximately 2.7 million new infections occurred during that year.

More than 12 million children have been orphaned by AIDS. In many countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, AIDS is erasing decades of progress made in extending life expectancy. Millions of adults are dying young or in early middle age.

The average life expectancy in Sub-Saharan Africa is now 47 years, when it could have been 62 without AIDS.

It’s hard to imagine that we still see this amount of poverty and suffering in this day and age.

Greys Story

Grey had a fever so his mother  took him to the village dispensary. The nurse there told her to take Grey to another, bigger hospital  – he had malaria.

She struggled to get the bus fare, then as she took him, Grey started to shake and she was sure he was going to die in her arms.

He had a high fever and was very confused. At hospital, he was given a quinine drip.  He still didn’t look better and his mother was sure she was going to lose him. After trying different medicines, by the fourth day he started to look better. Grey was lucky this time it was caught  just in time.

Any donations you make helps to support the Empower project in Tanzania which helps health care services to make sure that everyone has better access to medical treatment. Now, kids like Grey will be able to get medicine faster in the future so they’ll have every chance of survival, and can get treatment close to where they live.
